No Sir, I didn't like it
Sometimes things creep up on you when you least expect them.
Recently I instituted and announced a change to the template for this blog.
It had several new features that I liked. It was only after publishing it, experiencing some of the unintended changes, and getting helpful feedback (thanks James!) that I decided to roll back to something a little simpler.
The updated template I had used was "dynamic." Readers may have noticed that clicking on a blog entry resulted in an animation opening the entry.
Kinda cool I guess and it had a nice feature of being able to choose your own layout.
However...
Clicking on photos did not result in the full resolution versions that I had uploaded.
Not good.
I work hard on getting good images to help tell the story of my clock work.
AND sometimes images loaded slowly or not at all!
That is really not good.
AND another thing...
(A small but rather cool technical digression.)
I'm a regular user of the Mac browser Safari. For most Mac users it is probably the best web browser to use most of the time.
However I do like Google Chrome a lot and it has many great features including one that I use regularly on this blog.
It allows you to create embedded links to specific sections of a web page.
Sometimes I am offering the reader not to simply go to another blog entry or a web page but to click my link and land on a specific part of that page.
Chrome has the feature to highlight and create a link to that highlight like so:
And here is the resulting link directly to that text on the page.
Cool right?
Well back to our story, that new template disabled this feature.
My friend James had pointed out that the new template also limited the preview of an entry in his RSS reader. Not the end of the world because you can still click through but, like him, I prefer to be able to read through the whole blog entry in the reader. I like Feedly.
So...
Back to the drawing board.
James had written a nice note and suggested I consider Substack as a publishing platform. I did look at it closely. It has a lot of great features and has become hugely popular but is more that I want/need right now.
I may make that move someday but in the meantime... I'm trying this other Blogger template for now.
This template ("Contempo Light") has a few improvements over my original template and please let me know what you think.
It is missing a few of the features that drew me to the dynamic template but regarding that template...
In the end... well...
No sir, I did't like it!
